Andrea Bruce Wins First Chris Hondros Award
Andrea Bruce has won the first Getty Images and Chris Hondros Fund Award, and Dominic Bracco II (Slides 15 to 18), was named a finalist. The award is a memorial to Mr. Hondros, who was killed while photographing in Misrata, Libya, on April 20, 2011.
Though Ms. Bruce is receiving a $20,000 award that will enable her to pursue documentary projects, the news brought her to tears. Ms. Bruce and Mr. Hondros were friends, and it has been a little more than a year since he died along with Tim Hetherington.
“Chris was like a brother,” Ms. Bruce said. “We argued over politics and photography. And shared a love for books: he’s the only other person I know to bring Tolstoy on an embed. I trusted him completely and admired his passion and sense of purpose.”
