Photoville NYC 2021: A Compassionate Lens: Chris Hondros Fund, Ten Years On
As a photojournalist working in the world’s most dangerous places, Chris Hondros had the opportunity and distinct ability to connect his viewers to the people embroiled in far-flung and sometimes obscure conflicts. He recognized the shared humanity among those affected by war—regardless of culture or beliefs—and he was determined to share their challenges to the wider world. He hoped to provoke thought, raise awareness, and foster understanding.
On April 20, 2011, Chris Hondros was killed while on assignment in Misurata, Libya. The Chris Hondros Fund was established to honor the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and Getty Images photojournalist—to celebrate his legacy by highlighting the ways in which photojournalism brings to light shared human experiences. The fund supports photojournalists and education programs, and it raises awareness of stories that might otherwise go unreported.
Reflecting on 10 years since Hondros’s death, we asked the fund’s founders and awardees to select one of his photographs and share their thoughts about his prolific work—which continues to bring shared human experiences to light.
