CHF celebrates Meridith Kohut’s fierce determination to document those stories that might otherwise go unreported or unnoticed and her commitment to mentor and engage emerging photojournalists. With the spirit and kindness Chris spread, Meridith treats her colleagues and subjects with respect and has dedicated her career to bringing shared human experiences into view.
Kohut is an award-winning American photojournalist based in Caracas, Venezuela. Since 2007, she has covered Latin America for the foreign press. A regular contributor to the New York Times, Meridith has produced in-depth photo essays about the rise and collapse of Hugo Chávez’s socialist revolution in Venezuela, the drug trade in Bolivia, Cuba’s transition, gang violence in El Salvador, refugee and migration issues in Central America, labor rights and cholera outbreaks in Haiti, prostitution in Colombia, illegal gold mines and human rights abuses in Venezuela, and prison overcrowding in El Salvador.
Kohut’s numerous awards include the George Polk Journalism Award for Best Foreign Reporting, the New York Times Publisher’s Award for Foreign News Coverage, and the Overseas Press Club Award for Feature Photography. She is a graduate of the University of Texas School of Journalism, the Eddie Adams Workshop (2007), and the World Press Photo Masterclass in Latin America (2015).
